My Friend Bought a 2009 SUZUKI SX4 With A Manual Transmission… And Then Put $8,000 Into It!
THERE ARE CAR STORIES AND THEN THERE ARE SOME REALLY FUNNY CAR STORIES. THIS ONE IS THE LATTER! 😂
Earlier today, I got a blast from the past.
My old friend Dave called me from Prior Lake, Minnesota just to catch up.
I hadn’t talked to him in years.
In fact, I told him I think it had been about three cell phones ago, because he’s changed his number that many times while I’ve had the same phone number for what feels like forever. LOL!
We started talking about life, technology, and how much everything has changed over the years.
Dave told me he had just written a new book online and that it had unexpectedly started taking off, which I thought was pretty funny.
So naturally, I told him:
“You need to throw that thing on WritersFreak.com for seven bucks.”
From there, we started reminiscing about the old days when we sold computers together back in the 1990s.
We talked about how different technology is now, how the Internet has changed everything, and how weird it is that so much of life has moved online.
At one point, Dave brought up one of the guys we used to know who had sold a computer to Anne Rice, the famous vampire author.
That made me laugh, and I told him how I had sold a few computers years ago to Francis Ford Coppola, the guy behind The Godfather.
So we were already heading down memory lane pretty hard. And whenever I talk with Dave, the jokes just keep coming.
We play off of each other like a comedy routine. And I laugh at my own jokes, so I can’t help but laugh at his.
Then Dave casually drops this on me:
“By the way, I got a new car. Maybe you want to put it on CoolCarGuy.com.”
And I laughed.
I said:
“Really? What did you get?”
And with total pride in his voice, he says:
“Well, I got it about a year and a half ago and I love it. It’s a 2009 Suzuki SX4 with a manual transmission.”
At that point, I completely lost it. 😂
I started laughing, of course, and said:
“What did that set you back, a hundred dollars?”
In full Minnesota style, Dave starts laughing and says:
“No. No. I paid $4,800.”
I laughed again.
“You did NOT.”
And he said:
“Yeah, I did.”
So then I had to ask the obvious question.
“Dave, can you even find a place to work on those anymore? Are there even parts available?”
And that’s when the story got even better.
SO DAVE BOUGHT A 2009 SUZUKI SX4…
Dave told me he had taken the SX4 into a shop to get a few things fixed. At some point, they decided to do a radiator flush.
Then the shop called him and said:
“Yeah, you know, your radiator blew when we were doing a radiator flush. What do you want me to do?”
And Dave says to me, laughing:
“I told him, ‘Oh, why don’t you just drop it off at my house. What do you THINK you should do? You need to fix it!’”
Now I’m laughing.
He’s laughing.
And then he says:
“Like seriously, should he put it on a tow truck, bring it to my house, and then I can go find another Suzuki for parts?”
It was one of those conversations where the more he talked, the funnier it got.
Because this wasn’t just a guy who owned a Suzuki SX4.
This was a guy who genuinely LOVED his Suzuki SX4.
And I realized all over again that Dave is one of the funniest guys I know.
THEN IT GOT EVEN BETTER…
So I asked him the question I absolutely had to ask.
“What did it cost you to fix this $4,800, three-hundred-dollar car?”
And without missing a beat, Dave says:
“I put another $8,000 into it.”
I absolutely burst out laughing again.
“You’re into a 2009 Suzuki SX4 for $12,800?! REALLY?”
And Dave, in all his glorious certainty, says:
“John, it only had 70,000 miles. For a $12,800 car, who cares?”
Now at this point I’m practically crying laughing.
Because there are used-car decisions…
And then there are used-car life choices.
And my friend Dave had clearly made one.
WAIT… THERE AREN’T EVEN ANY SUZUKI DEALERS ANYMORE! 😂
Then I said:
“Dave, there aren’t even any Suzuki dealers left anymore!”
And he says:
“Oh yeah, this is funny…”
That’s always a dangerous sentence.
Then he tells me he actually got a recall notice from Suzuki in the mail.
That alone was hilarious!
Apparently, the notice told him to call a dealership that used to handle Suzuki and get the airbag-light issue checked out.
So Dave calls up a GM dealership and says something like:
“Did you used to sell Suzukis? Because I have an airbag light on.”
The guy says:
“Yeah, I think so…”
Then he puts Dave on hold…
And never comes back.
So Dave calls another dealership.
Pretty much the same story.
Only this time the guy says he’ll call him back.
And Dave says:
“Yeah, that was about three months ago.”
“I’m just keeping the airbag light on.”
I said:
“Black electrical tape does wonders.”
I could barely handle it.
This phone call was priceless.
WHO SOLD HIM THIS THING? 😂
So naturally, I had another question.
I said:
“Dave, I bet the guy who sold it to you was pretty excited to find somebody willing to buy this thing for $4,800. Was it a dealer or a private party?”
Dave says it was a private seller.
Then he tells me he met the guy down by a brewery where he worked.
And when the guy got out of the car, Dave said he was huge.
Like three-hundred-pound, former-football-player huge.
And Dave started laughing.
So I said:
“Because a giant just got out of a clown car?”
And Dave goes:
“Yeah!”
Then he said the seller looked at him and said:
“Now you know why I want to sell this thing.”
And I lost it all over again.
Because honestly?
That’s one of the funniest used-car visuals I’ve heard in a long time.
A giant climbing out of a little Suzuki SX4 and basically admitting:
“This car and I are not a long-term match.”
That is automotive storytelling gold.
BUT HERE’S THE FUNNY PART — DAVE LOVES THE CAR
After all of that…
Dave still loves the Suzuki SX4.
And honestly, I respect it.
He even told me he hasn’t had this much fun with a car since he owned an AMC Gremlin.
AN AMC GREMLIN?! 😂
Suddenly, the Suzuki SX4 made perfect sense.
DAVE HAS A TYPE! LOL!
He said that he beats people with the manual transmission racing down the freeway. Of course, he’s only putting on about 5,000 miles a year, so I laughed again and said:
“Sure you do. When you drive it.”
And he says:
“Yeah, yeah, you know that guy on that YouTube channel who used to be on TV and he’s always waving his arms?”
I said:
“Ah, no.”
And he said:
“Well, he said these cars are great with a manual and really hard to find, but don’t buy the CVT.”
I’m thinking:
“Dave, I wouldn’t tell anyone to buy one, but as long as you’re happy, who cares.”
There’s something hilarious and kind of admirable about a guy who buys an oddball little car, sinks way too much money into it, gets ghosted by dealerships over a recall, and still says:
“I love it.”
That tells me everything I need to know.
Because sometimes cars aren’t about logic.
Sometimes they’re about personality.
Sometimes they’re about the story.
And sometimes they’re about the fact that the thing only has 70,000 miles, has a manual transmission, and for whatever reason, it just makes the owner happy.
And in the end, that’s part of what makes the car world so entertaining.
Not every great car story involves a Ferrari.
Sometimes it involves a 2009 Suzuki SX4, a radiator flush gone wrong, an airbag-light recall nobody seems to want to touch, and a guy in Minnesota who wouldn’t trade the story for a nicer ride.
THE SUZUKI SX4 IS KIND OF A WEIRD LITTLE SURVIVOR
And that’s part of what makes this fun.
The Suzuki SX4 was never some glamorous collector car.
It wasn’t an exotic.
It wasn’t a muscle car.
It wasn’t something people were poster-shopping for in high school.
It was just this odd little hatchback/crossover thing that Suzuki sold before pretty much disappearing from the U.S. market.
But every now and then, one of these strange little survivors pops up and reminds you that the car world is way more interesting than just Corvettes, Mustangs, and Porsches.
A manual-transmission SX4 in 2026?
That’s not something you see every day.
And when somebody actually loves one enough to keep fixing it?
That’s even better.
HAVE YOU GOT A GREAT CAR STORY TO SHARE?
That’s one of the reasons I wanted to put this story on CarsFreak.com.
Because not every great automotive story has to be about the fastest car.
Or the most expensive one.
Or the rarest one.
Or a really cool car.
Sometimes the best stories come from the weird stuff.
The cars people weren’t supposed to fall in love with.
The cars that make no financial sense.
The cars that somehow survive long after common sense says they shouldn’t.
And that’s exactly why Dave’s SX4 deserved a Parking Spot.
So if you’ve got a funny car story…
A weird ownership story…
A car you overpaid for…
A car you still love anyway…
Or just something sitting in your driveway that deserves its moment on the Internet…
maybe it belongs on CarsFreak.com too.
😂 WHAT IF YOU COULD EARN MONEY PROMOTING CAR STORIES LIKE THIS?
Think about this for a minute.
I just turned a random phone call from an old friend in Minnesota into an entertaining automotive Parking Spot.
I don’t own Dave’s Suzuki SX4.
I didn’t sell it to him.
And I’m definitely not the guy who put eight thousand dollars into it. 😂
But I took a funny, interesting car story…
And turned it into content.
And content can become a product.
And a product can become a business.
THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT.
So what if you wanted to build something similar?
What if you wanted to build your own little online affiliate advertising business around: CARS!
